Jennifer Lawrence Says Mentioning Donald Trump Would ‘Add Fuel to a Fire’ Tearing the Country Apart
The star has revealed that she believes it's no longer fitting to voice opinions countering the Trump administration, concerned it could worsen unhelpful debate and further divisions within the nation.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Explains the Actress
Speaking with media, the Oscar winner commented, “During the first Trump administration, I thought I was moving hastily in a panicked state. But as we’ve learned, through repeated campaigns, public figures have no real impact at all on voter decisions.”
She continued, “So then what am I doing? I’m just voicing my thoughts on something that’s going to add fuel to a fire tearing the country apart.”
Changing Allegiances
The actress has spoken candidly about supporting conservative and liberal presidential nominees over the years. Growing up with Republican parents in her home state, she supported the Republican nominee in 2008 prior to switching to the Democrats and stating she realized during President Obama’s term that backing conservatives was opposing her personal freedoms as a woman.
Previous Comments
Several years ago, she stated that Donald Trump’s election might signal “a disaster” and endorsed the Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential race. More recently, she voiced her backing to Kamala Harris, “because I think she’s a strong contender and I trust that she will make every effort to defend women’s health rights.”
Celebrity Views
The star was aligned with most of Hollywood in her opposition to Donald Trump as a presidential contender, but the lack of leverage stars have over the public choices was underscored by his election win.
“Another four years appears changed,” noted Lawrence regarding Trump’s presidency. “Since he said what he was going to do. We understood his record for his first term. He was explicit. And voters made that decision.”
Current Projects
Jennifer Lawrence is discussing the drama, the filmmaker’s movie in which she portrays a recent parent who deals with her emotional state in the countryside. During a press conference for the movie in the film festival, she commented on the conflict in Gaza: “It’s frightening. It’s horrifying. What’s taking place is no less than a atrocity and it’s awful.”
Additional Thoughts
She continued by expressing that she was disheartened by “the disrespect in the discussions of American politics at present and how that is going to be normalised to the children today. It’s going to be typical to them that elected officials deceive.”
She aimed to shift outrage about the situation to leaders rather than celebrities. “Stay focused on the people in charge,” she remarked, which was interpreted as a nod to the then-recent pledge endorsed by thousands of entertainment industry figures to avoid Israeli film institutions.
Relatable Experiences
Lawrence, who received an Academy Award aged 22 for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, is generating Oscar buzz for her portrayal in the new film. While the director has disputed the story being interpreted as one of post-birth struggles and psychosis, Lawrence shared that she identified with parts of her role’s experience after the arrival of her new baby, soon after production wrapped.
“There was concern for my son,” she said, “just picturing every negative outcome, and then doubting everything that I was trying. I was already in therapy, but I started taking a treatment called that medicine and I continued it for 14 days and it really helped.”
Film Challenges
The actor also discussed regarding the empowering aspect of shooting revealing sequences in the project while she was expecting and limited physically.
“It’s refreshing,” she said, of being forced to set aside self-consciousness. “I mean, I occasionally wonder where I’m like, What separates me between my work and that profession? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
